The “It’s Alright, Ma, (I’m Only Bleeding)” lyric — “even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked” — has been a fan favorite for Dylan since he first performed it in October 1964.

At today’s ceremony, Obama said that he is “a really big fan” of the singer, and that, “There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music.” He added, “I remember in college, listening to Bob Dylan and my world opening up.”

Other medal recipients included novelist Toni Morrison, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, astronaut John Glenn, union organizer Dolores Huerta and all-time winningest basketball coach Pat Summitt, among others.

The White House says that the Medal of Freedom is awarded for “meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States or to world peace or to cultural or other significant endeavors.”
