Whatever his reasons, Mattera has carved out a great niche for himself as the Ambusher to the Stars. He’s pretty good at it, too. Just last week he got Chris Rock to rough up his cameraman. That’s ‘DC’s bad boy reporter‘ for ya.

His latest ambush? Bono! Mattera and Breitbart.com teamed up for an EXCLUSIVE!!! in which Mattera surprised the U2 frontman with questions about why his band is dodging taxes by moving from Ireland to Holland. There was only one problem: Mattera’s interviewing a Bono impersonator in these videos, which have now been set to “private.”

Don’tcha just hate when you ambush someone and it turns out to be their stunt double? The crew of Spaceball One certainly feels Mattera’s pain today.

In his new book, “Hollywood Hypocrites: The Devastating Truth About Obama’s Biggest Backers,” Mattera wrote, “The same Hollywood loons who got Obama elected will do so again. That is, unless we muzzle them. How? Not the way the Left tries to do, by silencing dissent. But by putting their political stances and public statements under the microscope of scrutiny to analyze whether they live by the same policy prescriptions they seek to inflict on America.”

A noble cause. But he never examined the ramifications of putting impersonators’ political stances and public statements under the microscope of scrutiny. Until now.

Since the untimely death of Andrew Breitbart just a few weeks ago, the late Internet raconteur’s network of websites has been caught with all kinds of egg on its face. First, it purported to have devastating video of President Barack Obama in college … which turned out to be a radical hug to a beloved professor. And now it must be just embarrassing to have to 404 a huge EXCLUSIVE!!! like this. I mean, it’s not every day you get to ambush a guy who kinda looks like that guy from the “Numb” video.

When The Blaze, Glenn Beck’s website, is calling you out for a big ol’ whoopsie, you know you dun goofed.

UPDATE: Mattera appeared on Sean Hannity’s radio show on Tuesday night pumping this tripe out. As Philip Bump points out, this dude doesn’t even have an Irish accent:

UPDATE II: Media Matters also pointed out, “The video identifies the encounter as having taken place on February 8, 2012, at The Village Recording Studios. Last night, Twitter user Mark Abernathy pointed out that a Bono impersonator was present at an event there that night (and wearing identical clothes as the ‘Bono’ that appears in the video).”

Guests at the W Thursday night rocked out Fitz and the Tantrums and sipped Absolute cocktails alongside art as part of ROCKED: A Photo Exhibition By Mick Rock. The exhibit, which will spend 2012 visiting W hotels across the country, includes photos of David Bowie, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Madonna, Kate Moss, Mick Jagger, Bono and Lady Gaga, Ceelo Green, and Janelle Monaie.

Following the soulful Fitz and his 5 Tantrums, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation had a DJ set, providing dance music for the show’s late-stayers.
